Yoga Reduces Stress
A few weeks back, I wasn’t feeling quite right, and I scheduled a checkup with my family doctor.
She told me everything was fine, except that my blood pressure was slightly higher than normal.
She told me that although it wasn’t high enough to warrant medication, as is the case with many people, perhaps I should try some stress-reduction techniques, and she recommended yoga.
This sounded to me like a better alternative than pills, so on my way home I stopped at a sporting goods store to look at yoga equipment.
I figured the first thing I would need is a yoga mat, and as I looked over the different styles, I found that they came in a standard, or classic thickness, as well as a style that was slightly thicker.
I asked the sales clerk what the difference was, and he told me that the thicker
yoga mat was a better choice for people with sensible elbows or knees.
Hearing that, combined with the fact that my home has hardwood floors, made the thicker yoga mat the logical choice for me.
The next thing in yoga equipment to catch my eye was these large vinyl balls.
I asked the clerk what the heck they were and what they were used for.
He told me they were called
yoga balls (I should have figured that) and were used in pilates, as well as back-strengthening exercises.
The back strengthening factor was another plus for me, and I figured this would do for a start, so I took my yoga ball and yoga mat too the checkout.
Once home with my
yoga equipment, I looked up some stress reduction and back exercises, and spent some time each day over the next couple of weeks practicing the techniques.
I am happy to say that just this week I paid another visit to my doctor, who told me that my blood pressure was now back to normal.
She re-iterated that this method was not for everyone, but in my case a small investment in some yoga equipment has left me feeling much better.
